Odell Beckham Jr. Released by Giants After Short, Unproductive Stint
The wide receiver's return to the team that drafted him ends after just three games without a single reception.
The New York Giants are releasing wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. just three games into his return with the team, marking an anticlimactic end to his nostalgic reunion. The three-time Pro Bowler signed with the Giants in June, the franchise that originally drafted him 12th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Beckham's release comes shortly after the Giants' Week 3 victory over the Tennessee Titans. In that game, he received his first target of the regular season, but did not record a catch. His second stint with the Giants concludes without him hauling in any receptions.
During his first five seasons with the Giants, Beckham was a prominent figure alongside quarterback Eli Manning, achieving over 1,000 receiving yards in four of those seasons. Following his initial tenure, he was traded to the Cleveland Browns ahead of the 2019 season, where he spent three years. He subsequently had brief stints with the Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens, and Miami Dolphins between 2021 and 2024.
The Giants' offense has faced challenges early in the season. Starting quarterback Jaxson Dart sustained a season-ending knee injury during a loss to the Rams. Veteran quarterback Jameis Winston has since stepped in, leading the Giants to a 12-7 win against Tennessee in a rain-affected game at MetLife Stadium.
On Monday, prior to Beckham's release, the Giants acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick.
