O'Neill Believes Hearts Title Win Would Benefit Scottish Football

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill believes a future Scottish Premiership title win for Hearts would be a substantial positive development for Scottish football. Hearts came close to winning the league last season, ultimately finishing second to O'Neill's Celtic on the final day of the campaign.

Hearts investor Tony Bloom has publicly stated his ambition for the club to win the league within the next decade, a sentiment echoed by O'Neill. "I do, yeah, I do," O'Neill responded when asked about the possibility. "I think their recruitment is really good. I think that what they've done has put pressure on Celtic and Rangers. They're a definite challenge."

O'Neill praised Hearts' persistence throughout last season and their ability to maintain pressure on the traditional top two. He noted the club's adoption of a system similar to that used by Brighton & Hove Albion, indicating a structured approach to player scouting and development.

"They kept going all last season. That was a big, big effort. They kept going and they took it right to the last couple of minutes. Are they capable of doing it? Yeah," O'Neill stated. He added that the challenge presented by Hearts is "a great thing for Scottish football, that the Old Firm is being challenged in a big, big way."

Reflecting on the controversial end to last season's title race, O'Neill maintained his stance despite criticism regarding his comments on the pitch invasion at Celtic Park. He emphasized that if Hearts had won the league, a similar celebration from their supporters would have been understandable.

"I don't care. I couldn't care less," O'Neill said when pressed on the criticism. "If Hearts had won and their fans had come onto the pitch - I'm telling you now, and it's easy for me to say this - I would have accepted that. Because it's the first time they would have won the league for years and years and years and the euphoria of doing that there would have been there. Of course."

Celtic's recent Europa League performance saw them lose 4-1 to Benfica, while Hearts drew 1-1 at home to Nordsjaelland in the Conference League. O'Neill expressed encouragement from his team's improved second-half display against Benfica, despite an early deficit. He also addressed the form of striker Kasper Hogh, who missed a close-range chance against Benfica, stating he believes the player will ultimately be fine over the course of the season, but acknowledged the importance of goals for confidence.
