O'Neill 'Baffled' by Refereeing in Northern Ireland's Nations League Win

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill stated he was "baffled" by the refereeing after his team secured a late 1-0 victory against Georgia in the Nations League. The match, which saw limited action in the first half, heated up after the break.

A pivotal moment occurred in the 65th minute when Georgia was awarded a penalty after a VAR review determined that defender Daniel Ballard had fouled Luka Lochoshvili. Georgia's Giorgi Kvaratskhelia's penalty was saved by Northern Ireland goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

Northern Ireland had their own penalty appeal waved away in the 88th minute when striker Conor Charles appeared to be fouled in the box. O'Neill also raised concerns about a foul on substitute Paul Smyth, which he believes led to Ballard's injury.

"At times it didn't go our way. I've not seen the incident back but to me it seemed incredibly harsh to give a penalty for that," O'Neill said. "We feel aggrieved that we didn't get one at the other end. The foul on Ceadach when he came on the pitch causes Dan to get injured."

O'Neill confirmed that Ballard sustained a hamstring injury during the play following the foul on Smyth. The Sunderland defender is expected to miss Northern Ireland's upcoming three matches against Hungary, Ukraine, and Georgia. "You saw the nature of how he pulled up. It's a hamstring," O'Neill stated. "We'll scan him tomorrow but he's certainly not going to be available for the next three games."

Despite the contentious officiating, O'Neill praised his players, describing them as "magnificent" and highlighting the team's character. "showed every side of our character tonight," he added.
