O'Neill Admits Celtic Faced 'European Lesson' in Ferencvaros Defeat

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill stated that his team received a harsh European lesson after a demoralizing home defeat to Ferencvaros in their Europa League opener.

The loss followed a significant Premier Sports Cup quarter-final defeat to Rangers the previous weekend. Ferencvaros, currently fifth in the Hungarian top flight, secured a convincing victory. Former Celtic winger Daniel Arzani contributed to the defeat with a notable performance, including a goal shortly after halftime.

Ferencvaros took the lead through Bamidele Yusuf's deflected shot. Celtic equalized in the 44th minute via Mika Baur, but Kristoffer Zachariassen scored for the visitors just a minute later, before Arzani added a third goal after the interval. O'Neill described the loss as psychologically damaging, particularly the concession of a goal so soon after equalizing.

"It's a huge frustration, obviously, but it’s also psychologically quite damning as well," O'Neill said. "Just when you’ve fought your way back into the game and you think, well if you can’t deal with the minute the fourth official puts up, at least defend it properly and we didn’t do that. That was really disappointing."

O'Neill emphasized the need for his team to be braver, particularly in their upcoming crucial Premiership clash against Rangers at Celtic Park. "When we have decent possession of the ball, just don’t give it away," he advised. "But also I think taking a few risks as well too — risks in the proper areas of the field."

Following the defeat, O'Neill made changes to the lineup, including benching striker Kasper Hogh and starting Camilo Duran up front. Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was also replaced by Viljami Sinisalo. When asked about the goalkeeper change, O'Neill responded, "No, I won’t talk to you about the thinking behind that there. Sinisalo was always going to play."

He added, "Believe it or not Connie, my job is not to explain every single situation to you, much as you are going to ask and I’m delighted you are." When pressed further about fan interest in his reasoning, O'Neill suggested, "Well, why don’t I tell the fans through Celtic TV?"

The team is now focused on regrouping and preparing for the upcoming match against Rangers. "We have seven games in which to try and get some points on the board. Tonight was I think a European lesson for us in many aspects," O'Neill stated. "We’ll get ourselves together. We need to re-energise ourselves as much as anything else."
