Kate O'Connor claimed the European Championship gold medal in the heptathlon, setting a new national record with a score of 6,751 points. The Irish athlete entered the final event, the 800 meters, with a 51-point lead and maintained her advantage over nearest challenger Emma Oosterwegel of the Netherlands.
O'Connor finished the 800 meters in 2:11.74, ensuring she stayed ahead of Oosterwegel, who won the race in 2:10.87. Oosterwegel secured the silver medal with 6,713 points, and Sofie Dokter of the Netherlands took bronze with 6,664 points.
This victory follows O'Connor's gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in July and a silver medal at last year's World Championships. She described the win as a dream, dedicating the medal to her late grandmother, who was a significant supporter of both her and her father.
"This is my dream, but it's his dream too and I have to dedicate this medal to my granny because she was both of our biggest fans and would have been jumping for joy if she was here," O'Connor stated. She also acknowledged the increased pressure with each competition and the personal difficulty of the past year, including her grandmother's passing earlier in the year.
