Ireland's Kate O'Connor holds the lead in the heptathlon at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham with only the 800-meter race left to compete. Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson is out of medal contention.

O'Connor, who was in third place after the first four events, moved into the lead following strong performances in the long jump and javelin. Her personal best in the long jump was 6.55 meters, and she threw 50.16 meters in the javelin, bringing her total score to 5,812 points. She currently leads the Netherlands' Emma Oosterwegel by 51 points, with another Dutch athlete, Sofie Dokter, in third place.

Poland's Adrianna Sulek-Schubert, who was the overnight leader, dropped to seventh place after a difficult start to Saturday's events. Johnson-Thompson, hampered by an injury-affected build-up to the championships, is in 19th place, 780 points behind O'Connor. Her teammate Jade O'Dowda is in 13th place.

The heptathlon competition is scheduled to conclude on Saturday evening with the 800-meter race.
