NYCFC Falters to Draw, Playoff Chances Dim

New York City FC (NYCFC) settled for a disappointing 1-1 draw against LAFC on Saturday night, a result that further dims the team's playoff aspirations. The tie, played at Citi Field, leaves NYCFC in 11th place in the Eastern Conference standings with only four games remaining in the regular season.

LAFC took the lead just before halftime when Leo Walta scored in stoppage time from a free kick. The foul, committed by Aiden O’Neill in the 44th minute, gave LAFC an opportunity just outside the box. Walta's right-footed shot found the top right corner, leaving goalkeeper Matt Freese unable to make a save.

NYCFC managed to equalize in the 59th minute. A corner kick taken by Nicolás Fernández Mercau found Andrés Perea, who scored with a flying header to pull the home side level.

Despite securing a point, NYCFC was fortunate to avoid defeat. In stoppage time, LAFC’s Son Heung-min broke free and managed to get a shot off from inside the box that struck the post and stayed out. The final whistle sounded shortly after.

This draw continues a concerning trend for NYCFC at Citi Field, as the team has yet to secure a regular-season win at the venue this year. Their last victory at the Queens stadium was on May 17, 2025, against Red Bull New York.
