NYCFC Coach Pascal Jansen Addresses Future Amid Playoff Struggles

Pascal Jansen, head coach of New York City FC, has directly addressed speculation about his future with the club as the team navigates a challenging period that has significantly impacted their playoff aspirations. When asked during a press conference on Thursday if he had discussed his position with the front office in light of the team's performance, Jansen responded with a simple, "No."

Despite the absence of any public indication that Jansen's tenure is in jeopardy, fan speculation has intensified. This comes as NYCFC is experiencing a considerable downturn, having secured only one victory in their last 13 regular-season matches. The team has gone from a position where hosting a playoff game seemed plausible to one where simply qualifying for the postseason is uncertain.

New York City FC's inability to consistently find solutions to their struggles has contributed to growing frustration during the latter half of the season. The team recently secured a single point in a 1-1 draw against LAFC at Citi Field. However, the result saw NYCFC drop further in the standings. Despite a generally improved team performance, a late stoppage-time shot by Son Heung-min narrowly missed, hitting the goalpost and preventing a potential loss.

The team's recent matches have been characterized by narrow margins, with small details often separating crucial points from none. This has consistently placed NYCFC on the unfavorable side of outcomes, putting their playoff hopes in peril.

Speaking on Thursday ahead of the team's upcoming match against Orlando, Jansen acknowledged that while there were positives to glean from the draw against LAFC, the team's offensive output remains a significant concern. New York City FC has scored only four goals in their last five games, while conceding eight in the same period.

"There’s moments where we are not determined enough to get ourselves in the box and in positions in order to have a bigger opportunity to score a goal," Jansen stated. "What you saw at the end of the game, when we have to go all in in two counterattacks and make sure they don’t get a second goal, Unfortunately, that has happened more often to us than we would like to."

When questioned about the recurrence of these mistakes and difficult circumstances, Jansen indicated that he had not identified any specific underlying cause. "There’s nothing in particular that I can point at at this moment in time to have an explanation why the mistakes happen and to the people that the mistakes are made," he said. "It happens in our game. That’s obvious, and unfortunately, those mistakes have a massive magnitude on our game."

With only four regular-season games remaining before their matchup with Orlando on Saturday, New York City FC's playoff probability, according to Soccer Datavizer, stands at 20 percent.

"We try to turn [the season] around every day, obviously, because we are fully aware of the situation we’re in," Jansen added. "I think LAFC is also a positive reflection of that, because I think overall we played a pretty decent game as a team, without the attacking impact."
