Northwestern Wildcats christen new Ryan Field with dominant win over Penn State

The Northwestern Wildcats celebrated the opening of their new $875 million Ryan Field with a resounding 34-13 victory against the Penn State Nittany Lions in a key Big Ten matchup. The win marked a significant moment for the Wildcats, who had been playing in a temporary stadium.

Both teams entered the game with one loss, making the contest crucial for Big Ten Championship aspirations. The Wildcats' performance followed an impressive showing against Indiana, demonstrating it was no fluke as they outplayed Penn State.

The first points at the new Ryan Field were scored by Northwestern's Jackson Kleather with a 50-yard field goal, capping the team's opening drive. Following a Penn State punt, the Wildcats' offense quickly went back to work. Running back Joseph Himon II broke free for a 47-yard run, setting up quarterback Aidan Chiles for a touchdown plunge.

Northwestern finished the first quarter with 144 total offensive yards, 109 of which came on the ground. In the second quarter, Penn State recovered a fumble, leading to an 8-yard rushing touchdown by Carson Hansen. Northwestern responded swiftly with another touchdown, extending their lead. The Wildcats added another score before halftime, making it 24-7. Penn State attempted a 45-yard field goal before the end of the half, but it was missed.

By halftime, Northwestern had accumulated 278 yards of offense. The second half saw continued struggles for Penn State's offense, while Northwestern's defense contained their attempts to gain momentum. An interception by Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht early in the fourth quarter further hampered their efforts.

Overall, Northwestern amassed 506 total yards of offense, with a dominant 413 yards coming from their rushing game. The Wildcats' next home game will be against Ball State, while Penn State is set to host USC.
