Cameron Norrie, the British number two, has ended a six-match losing streak with a decisive 6-4, 6-1 victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic in the opening round of the Mifel Open in Los Cabos, Mexico. This marks Norrie's first win since the Madrid Open in April.
Norrie's recent run of defeats included a disappointing first-round exit at Wimbledon to qualifier Michael Zheng. However, at the tournament where he claimed his inaugural ATP title in 2021, the fifth seed managed to overcome an early setback. After having his serve broken twice in the first set, including in the opening game, Norrie regained control. He dropped only five points on his own serve in the second set and secured two breaks against the American Kovacevic to advance.
Norrie is now set to face either Australian James Duckworth or American Aidan Mayo in the last 16 of the Mifel Open.
In contrast, British number two Katie Boulter was eliminated in the first round of the Citi Open in Washington D.C., extending her own losing streak to four matches. Ashlyn Krueger of the United States defeated Boulter 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Boulter won only four points from a 2-0 advantage in the deciding set, contributing to her early exit from the tournament.
