NJ/NY Gotham FC Chasing History as NWSL Shield Race Heads to Final Day
The defending champions can clinch their first-ever NWSL Shield with a win or draw on Sunday, a scenario that mirrors their clutch performances in past postseasons.
NJ/NY Gotham FC is on the verge of making history as the NWSL Shield race, awarded to the league leader in points, comes down to the final day of the regular season. Forward Midge Purce described the situation as "really exciting" and fitting for a club that has a reputation for performing best under pressure.
Gotham FC enters the final weekend with 58 points, holding a three-point lead over the second-place San Diego Wave. To secure the Shield for the first time in franchise history, Gotham needs at least a draw against the Utah Royals on Sunday. A loss, combined with a San Diego victory over Bay FC, would see the Wave claim the Shield due to a superior goal differential.
This is the first time since 2023 and only the fifth time in league history that the Shield race has gone down to the wire. Gotham FC has previously won two NWSL championships, entering the postseason as the lowest seed in both instances.
"It wasn’t the plan to wait to the last minute," Purce said. "But here we are, and we’re pumped and ready to go." She added that the team's focus remains on playing their game and sticking to their processes.
Coach Juan Carlos Amorós emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on the match itself, acknowledging the significance of the occasion for the club while prioritizing their style of play. "It’s important that we go out there ready to play the game and know the occasion, obviously, it’s a big one for the club, it could be a historic moment but for us, it’s sticking to our processes, our style of play."
This potential Shield title would add to Gotham FC's growing list of accomplishments. The club has won two of the past three NWSL championships, captured the 2025 CONCACAF W Champions Cup, and won this year's NWSL Challenge Cup. They have also qualified for the 2028 Women's Club World Cup.
The team has faced significant challenges this season, including season-ending injuries to key players like Emily Sonnett, Bruninha, and Jordynn Dudley. They also navigated roster changes, including the addition of Australian striker Sam Kerr and the departure of Esther González. Gotham played their previous match without midfielder Rose Lavelle and forward Jaedyn Shaw due to injuries, though both have returned to practice this week.
Despite the adversity, Purce highlighted the team's resilience. "That's definitely a first principle of our team: Being resilient and just finding a way," she said. "And I think that is probably one of the most important characteristics of any winning team."
Gotham FC will host a playoff quarterfinal next Sunday, regardless of Sunday's Shield outcome. The club is also investing in its future with a $35 million practice facility and plans to relocate home matches to Queens in 2028.
