Nikita Kucherov Requests Trade from Tampa Bay Lightning

Reigning MVP Nikita Kucherov has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning, the latest prominent player to seek a move in a turbulent NHL season. Kucherov, who has played his entire 13-year career with the Lightning, has informed teammates and the organization that he will not re-sign at the end of his current contract and wishes to be traded, according to a report by SportsNet’s Elliotte Friedman.

The forward is in the final year of an eight-year, $76 million contract. The report did not specify a reason for his trade request.

Kucherov does not possess a full no-trade clause. Instead, he has provided a list of 10 preferred destinations, according to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun.

This development follows a season marked by several other high-profile trade requests. Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin is currently suspended without pay after telling the team he would not play unless traded. Earlier this season, Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, the 2024-25 Hart Trophy winner, was suspended for a similar reason before being traded to the New Jersey Devils.

In the offseason, former Senators captain Brady Tkachuk requested a trade and was subsequently dealt to the Florida Panthers to join his brother, Matthew.

While Larkin's frustration reportedly stems from the Red Wings' lack of playoff success during his tenure, Kucherov's situation is viewed differently. The Lightning have won two Stanley Cups with Kucherov as a key offensive force and have consistently been Stanley Cup contenders throughout his career.

Kucherov, the Lightning's all-time leading scorer, is experiencing a comparatively low-scoring season for him, with four goals in 12 games. However, he is still averaging over a point per game for the 10th consecutive year.

Over his 13 seasons with the Lightning, Kucherov has recorded 405 goals and 734 assists. He has led the league in scoring three times during his career.
