Nicolas Jackson's Brace Fuels Aston Villa's Dominant Champions League Victory
Nicolas Jackson scored twice as Aston Villa secured their biggest-ever European win with a commanding performance against Fenerbahce.

Aston Villa achieved their largest margin of victory in European competition with a resounding 6-0 triumph over Fenerbahce. The dominant performance, highlighted by a first-half brace from Nicolas Jackson, signals growing momentum for Unai Emery's side in the Champions League.
The win marked Villa's first at Villa Park this season, alleviating concerns after a slow start to their home campaign. Prior to this match, the team had secured only one point from their opening three Premier League home games, though a recent draw against Brentford had prevented a consecutive streak of home league defeats under Emery.
Against Fenerbahce, Villa found a willing opponent whose squad featured several former Premier League players. Despite strong saves from goalkeeper Zion Suzuki in the first half, the visitors conceded quickly. Johan Manzambi opened the scoring, followed by two goals from Jackson, establishing complete control for Aston Villa before halftime. The goals were notably scored at the end of the pitch adjacent to the North Stand's ongoing construction, an area where Villa had previously scored only once this season.
Further goals from Ross Barkley, who scored twice, and a late tap-in from Tammy Abraham, underscored Villa's dominance. This was the first time the club had scored six goals in a match since a 6-1 victory over Brighton three years ago, and they had previously scored five against Hibernian in the Europa Conference League in 2023.
Emery acknowledged that his team's rebuild, which involved integrating ten new players after a chaotic summer, is still a work in progress. "There is still a lot of work to do and we need time, we are progressively getting better and it was a good step forward," he stated post-match. "In the Champions League the three points are important. We want to be a protagonist in the Champions League."
The match saw positive contributions from new signings, including Manzambi's skillful play and Jackson's clinical finishing. Leon Goretzka also made his debut as a late substitute. Former Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov noted the team's growing cohesion, stating, "It seems as though they're clicking together and there's a flow to their game."
Jackson, Villa's record £65 million signing, arrived to fill the void left by Ollie Watkins' departure. Having previously worked with Emery at Villarreal, where Emery gave him his debut, Jackson has quickly repaid the manager's faith. He expressed a desire for a hat-trick but prioritized the team's victory. "I wanted to take it but the most important thing is we win. Hopefully next time I'll get the hat-trick," Jackson told TNT Sports. "It's very important. We haven't won at home. Our keeper is amazing."
Jackson's four goals in three games and five for the season are helping Villa and their fans move past Watkins' summer exit. Emery praised Jackson's overall contribution, noting his scoring ability and defensive work. "Jackson is doing a fantastic job. He's scoring, he's working defensively [and] helping the team," Emery said. "This is very important and maybe in the future he can shoot (from the spot) as well."
Aston Villa's attention now turns to their upcoming Premier League fixture against Newcastle. Jackson expressed optimism about building on this success with his attacking teammates, stating, "He [Johan Manzambi] is a top player. I'm really happy we're playing together. I hope we score many more goals together. [Ibrahim Mbaye] is [also] an amazing player. We're in the [Senegal] national team together and hopefully he'll get more time to play [for Villa]. He's very fast and it's good to have him."
