NHL Puck Tracking and Analytics Shift Vezina Trophy Landscape

The National Hockey League's evolution, marked by advancements in puck-tracking technology and analytics, has significantly altered the landscape for evaluating goaltenders and predicting the Vezina Trophy winner. These changes have led to a shift in how scoring and goaltending performance are measured.

In the 2015-16 NHL season, the average save percentage was .915, with a goals-against average of 2.51. By the most recent season, these numbers had declined to .896 and 2.88, respectively. This trend indicates an increase in scoring across the league. Beyond scoring rates, the precision of NHL's puck-tracking data is now far greater, leading to fewer shots on goal being officially recorded if they are deemed unlikely to result in a goal. Simultaneously, teams have embraced analytics, emphasizing shot quality over shot quantity. This strategic shift means goaltenders may face fewer shots per game, but those shots are often from higher-danger scoring areas.

These developments have made handicapping the Vezina Trophy, historically an unpredictable award, even more challenging. While dominant goaltenders like Andrei Vasilevskiy, Igor Shesterkin, and Connor Hellebuyck have claimed five of the last seven awards, two recipients in that span were considered surprising choices: Linus Ullmark in 2023 and Marc-Andre Fleury in 2021, neither of whom were heavily favored beforehand.

Complicating the 2026-27 season's betting market, preseason favorite Connor Hellebuyck is currently engaged in a contract dispute and has requested a trade from the Winnipeg Jets. He was listed at +500 by bet365 Sportsbook. The current top contenders on betting boards include Logan Thompson (+700), Vasilevskiy (+750), Ilya Sorokin (+800), and Shesterkin (+900).

Despite the increased difficulty in predicting the award, potential long-shot candidates offer intriguing value. Linus Ullmark, who won the Vezina in 2023, is listed at 60/1 with bet365. While the Vezina is an individual honor, team defensive performance plays a crucial role. The Ottawa Senators, Ullmark's team, demonstrated strong defensive structure in the 2025-26 season, ranking highly in expected goals against, high-danger scoring chances allowed, and shots on goal at 5-on-5. Ullmark experienced personal issues and took a leave of absence during the past season, but his strong performance down the stretch and in the playoffs suggests he could carry momentum into the new year.

Another potential breakout candidate is Joel Hofer of the St. Louis Blues, available at 125/1. Hofer has served as a reliable backup to Jordan Binnington for three seasons. With Binnington becoming a pending free agent, Hofer is positioned to take over the starting role. Beyond his .908 career save percentage over 115 games, Hofer recorded 11.7 goals saved above expected in 46 appearances last season, indicating strong underlying performance metrics. These factors make him a compelling dark horse for the award.
