NHL Merges Winnipeg Jets Histories, Creating Complex Record Keeping

The National Hockey League has officially merged the statistical histories of both incarnations of the Winnipeg Jets, a move intended to clarify team lineage but which has introduced new complexities into franchise records.

The NHL and the Jets announced the consolidation of the historical data from the original Winnipeg Jets, which began in the World Hockey Association in the 1970s, and the current iteration of the team that originated as the Atlanta Thrashers.

Franchise Lineage and Consolidation

The original Winnipeg Jets franchise was one of four teams that transitioned from the WHA to the NHL. This team relocated to Arizona in 1996 to become the Coyotes. Subsequently, the Atlanta Thrashers were established in 1999 and later moved to Winnipeg in 2011, becoming the current Jets.

The recent decision merges the records of the WHA-era Jets with those of the Thrashers-turned-Jets. This means that the historical statistics of the franchise that eventually became the Arizona Coyotes (and later had its assets sold to form the Utah Mammoth) are now treated separately from the team that returned to Winnipeg.

Impact on Player Records

This merger creates unique situations for player statistics. For instance, Teemu Selanne's standout rookie season in 1992-93, originally recorded as part of the first Jets franchise, is now statistically linked to the Thrashers' history. Similarly, Shane Doan, who was drafted by the original Jets, played his rookie season in Winnipeg before a lengthy career with the Arizona Coyotes, now sees his career statistics recontextualized within the merged Jets record book.

The consolidation also has an effect on franchise scoring leaders. The late Dale Hawerchuk has now become the all-time goals and points leader for the current Jets franchise, surpassing records previously set by Mark Scheifele in 2025. Scheifele will need to regain these top spots, starting the next season needing seven goals and twenty-two points to reclaim the franchise lead.

While the NHL's action aims to streamline team history, the intricate transitions and relocations of franchises have resulted in a record-keeping situation that remains notably complex.
