C.J. Gardner-Johnson, a defensive back who has played for six NFL teams, claims a confrontation with a general manager's friend, not on-field performance, led to his release from the Houston Texans last season. Gardner-Johnson, now with the Buffalo Bills, detailed his perspective in an interview with The Athletic's Tim Graham.

Gardner-Johnson was released by the Texans on September 23, following reports of alleged coverage breakdowns and friction with teammates. At the time, KPRC Channel 2 also reported claims that Gardner-Johnson demanded a trade and criticized other players' contracts. The player denied these specific accusations, telling Graham, "I never said s*** about nobody's contract. I'm on a $33 million deal. Why the f*** would I talk about somebody's contract?"

Instead, Gardner-Johnson pointed to an incident during a team training camp at the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. He alleged that an individual, identified as "the GM's friend" and not officially part of the organization, confronted him and used a derogatory term. Gardner-Johnson admitted to becoming upset, which he believes led the individual to speak with the general manager. "Next thing I'm cut," Gardner-Johnson stated.

Houston Texans executive vice president and general manager Nick Caserio was not explicitly named in The Athletic report, and the team declined to comment when contacted. Caserio previously stated in October that the decision to cut Gardner-Johnson was a "shot on goal, didn't work out, move on." He added, "Certainly, wish him well. Good to work with. In the end that's a decision that we made and we moved ahead."

Gardner-Johnson did not address the 47-day period between the alleged altercation at Greenbrier and his release from the Texans.

Despite the tumultuous exit from Houston, Gardner-Johnson has had notable successes in his NFL career. While playing for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024, he tied for the league lead with six interceptions. He also started for the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, showcasing his versatility and impact as a defensive back.
