The National Football League has decided against holding a supplemental draft for quarterback Brendan Sorsby, citing concerns over the integrity of the game and the player's extensive sports betting history. The league stated that holding such a draft would be a distraction to teams as training camps approach.

In a letter to Sorsby, Larry Ferazani, General Counsel of the NFL Management Council, explained the decision. He noted that the league had no plans to conduct a supplemental draft this year, as no other player had sought entry. Ferazani added that Sorsby's petition, submitted shortly before the deadline and without supporting information, did not provide a sufficient basis to alter these plans. The issues raised were deemed too significant and too closely tied to the league's core integrity interests for meaningful review within the presented timeline.

Sorsby admitted to wagering over $90,000 on college and professional sports during his collegiate career, including bets on games involving the Indiana Hoosiers, his former team. The NFL's decision comes after Sorsby was declared ineligible by the NCAA following an investigation into his gambling activities. Sorsby had reportedly attempted to continue his college career after the NCAA's decision and pursued litigation before abandoning those efforts.

Ferazani's letter pointed out that Sorsby's petition did not address his gambling conduct or demonstrate accountability. It also questioned whether he would adhere to league rules governing the integrity of competition. Commissioner Roger Goodell has previously emphasized that participation in the NFL is a privilege carrying significant responsibilities, including accountability.

Sorsby's attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, has stated that the league's decision is a violation of the collective bargaining agreement and the law, and indicated plans to pursue the matter with the NFL Players Association. The league encouraged Sorsby to focus on preparing for the 2027 NFL Annual Draft.

Sorsby's future in professional football remains uncertain. While he may prepare for the 2027 draft, other professional leagues such as the UFL (which recently concluded its season) or the Canadian Football League could be potential avenues for him to continue playing.
