Joachim Klement, an investment strategist who had correctly predicted the outcomes of the last three FIFA World Cups using a mathematical model, has faced public criticism after his prediction for the current tournament proved incorrect. The Netherlands, whom Klement had tabbed as winners, were eliminated after a penalty shootout loss to Morocco.
Adding to Klement's predicament, his model also projected Japan to lose to Brazil. However, Brazil secured a 2-1 victory over Japan in stoppage time, prompting a social media response from Brazilian player Neymar. "Mr. Joachim Klement… please try again at the next World Cup," Neymar posted. "You got it wrong again."
Klement, who initially developed his prediction model to highlight the unreliability of economic forecasts, acknowledged his recent misstep with a measure of humor. He posted on his blog, "This morning, I am sitting at my desk with a poster taped to it saying 'No Refunds' and a Dutch flag at half mast."
He further commented on the unpredictable nature of knockout stage matches, noting that "Every one of the matches could easily have gone the other way, particularly the penalty shootouts." Despite the inaccurate prediction, Klement expressed belief in the Dutch team's potential, suggesting they were unlucky in their match against Morocco. He also noted that Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has stepped down following the team's elimination.
Klement indicated that while he apologizes for any false hope given to Dutch supporters, he believes the team has the capability to win a major trophy in the future, possibly at the Euros in two years. However, he stated he would refrain from making forecasts for that tournament.
Klement's model had previously garnered attention for successfully forecasting the winners of the 2018, 2022, and 2026 World Cups.
