Newcastle United Unveils New Club Crest After Fan Consultation

Newcastle United has revealed a new club crest, marking the first update to the emblem since 1988. The decision followed an extensive two-year consultation process with supporters.

A poll indicated that 84 percent of fans favored updating the existing crest rather than a complete redesign. From a shortlist of three options, the chosen crest received support from 64.8 percent of 27,348 eligible voters, comprising men's and women's season ticket holders, and Mags and Mags+ members.

Club officials stated that the crest is deeply rooted in Newcastle's city coat of arms, a sentiment echoed by supporters who emphasized retaining key elements. The redesigned crest features a more distinct castle, representing the city, and a refined black and white shield. Flanking the shield are hippocampi, a mythological reference to the region's maritime history and shipbuilding. The club's demi-lion and pennon have also been updated for better balance and alignment.

Newcastle acknowledged that the previous 38-year-old design had limitations, with details and lines becoming indistinct on modern platforms such as phone screens, broadcast graphics, and digital applications. These elements, the club noted, tended to lose their shape and blur, especially at the scale and speed required by contemporary media.

David Hopkinson, Newcastle's chief executive officer, emphasized that the new crest honors the club's heritage while fans were given the decisive say. "Our crest came from the city's own coat of arms, and it still does," Hopkinson said. "It honours where we have come from, it represents who we are now, and it will become an iconic symbol for generations of supporters around the world who believe in it and unite behind it."

The new crest will be gradually implemented across physical signage, digital platforms, and broadcast channels in the coming months. It is scheduled to appear on club kits beginning with the 2027-28 season.
