Newcastle United has finalized the signing of 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax, with the deal potentially reaching £23 million. Steur arrived on Tyneside on Wednesday evening to complete a medical and finalize his contract.

Steur has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2031. "It's an incredible feeling to be here," Steur stated. "It's a giant club in the Premier League and it was always my dream to play in the best league in the world."

He joined Ajax at the age of seven and spent over a decade with the Dutch club before making the move. "I was at home at Ajax – I joined when I was seven and I leave with only good memories – but when a club like Newcastle comes for you, it's really hard to say no," he added.

Last season, Steur became a regular in Ajax's second team, notably starting in the De Klassieker match against Feyenoord at just 17 years old. Statistics from Opta indicate that among midfielders aged 18 or younger in the Eredivisie at the start of that campaign, Steur led in chances created (15), total carries (231), and duel success (56.8%). He also ranked highly in other metrics, including passes (623), passing accuracy (89.7%), tackles (20), possession won (49), and duels won (46).

Newcastle's head coach, Eddie Howe, described Steur as a "top young prospect." Howe commented, "We see real potential in Sean and believe he has the characteristics to become a valuable player for us for years to come. Sean is an exciting addition to our squad. He's had an excellent upbringing at Ajax, who have an outstanding track record of producing young players."
