Newcastle United is reportedly targeting Sporting Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek as the club seeks to strengthen its squad. The 24-year-old Czech Republic international was previously the subject of a rejected bid from Hull City and has also attracted interest from Benfica.

Hornicek turned down a move to Hull City earlier in the transfer window, despite the Premier League club matching his £25.9 million release clause. Braga's president, António Salvador, confirmed that the player himself refused the move, stating Hornicek felt it was not the right club for him at this time.

Hornicek recently featured in Braga's 1-0 victory over FK Železničar Pančevo in a Europa Conference League qualifier. His performances have drawn attention from several clubs.

Newcastle had initially pursued Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, but he is expected to join Leeds United in a deal valued around £45 million. The Magpies also considered Brighton keeper Carl Rushworth, but ultimately decided against a move due to his limited top-flight experience. Rushworth remains a target for Coventry City.

With Trafford and Rushworth seemingly off the table, Newcastle has now made inquiries about Hornicek. A deal could potentially be finalized quickly if both clubs and the player agree to proceed.
