NC State Fires Football Coach Dave Doeren After 14 Seasons
The university announced the decision Saturday following a loss that put the Wolfpack at 3-4 on the season.
North Carolina State announced Saturday the firing of head football coach Dave Doeren, concluding his 14-year tenure with the Wolfpack.
The decision comes a day after the team lost to Stanford, 31-28, bringing their season record to 3-4.
"I want to thank Coach Doeren for his service and contributions to NC State, and for always representing the university with pride," athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a statement. "I appreciate his leadership during his 14-year tenure and the passion he brought to this role. We wish Dave, Sara and his family the best in the future."
The university stated that a "national search" for Doeren's successor will commence immediately. Doeren joined NC State in 2013, coming from Northern Illinois where he served two seasons as head coach. His first season with the Wolfpack resulted in a 3-9 record, but he subsequently led the team to 11 bowl appearances over his remaining 13 seasons, including a streak of six consecutive bowl games.
Doeren compiled a record of 98-73 at NC State. He finished with a winning record in 10 of his campaigns with the program. Todd Goebbel, the running backs coach and special teams coordinator, will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the current season. The post-Doeren era will begin with NC State hosting California. Doeren is the second coach dismissed this season, following Mike Locksley of Maryland, who parted ways with the team earlier in the week.
