ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst has altered his assessment of LeBron James' potential free agency destinations, suggesting that the Cleveland Cavaliers are currently the favored team, though he stressed this sentiment is based on "vibes" rather than concrete reporting. Windhorst previously indicated that the Philadelphia 76ers were the frontrunners to sign James, citing his relationship with Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey.
During a July 7 appearance on ESPN Cleveland, Windhorst stated that "people in the league think that it’s pointing towards Cleveland," but immediately qualified this by saying, "it’s just vibes." He reiterated that there is no traditional or formal sourcing to support this shift, underscoring that the idea of James returning to Cleveland is currently speculative.
This public revision marks a departure from his earlier assertion about the 76ers. Despite the unconventional basis of his latest "report," Windhorst acknowledged that such sentiments are being discussed publicly. He noted that James recently spent the Fourth of July weekend in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, which is located less than an hour from Cleveland. James has played two stints with the Cavaliers previously. Additionally, Cavaliers star guard Donovan Mitchell, who recently signed a four-year contract extension with the team, has expressed his desire to play alongside James.
While the situation remains fluid and James' ultimate decision is uncertain, the Cavaliers are now considered a significant contender in the race for his services.
