National Tight Ends Day Emerges as Key Opportunity for Fantasy Football Managers

National Tight Ends Day, which began as a lighthearted sideline joke in 2018 and quickly evolved into an NFL-wide event by 2019, has become a significant occasion for fantasy football enthusiasts, often marked by unexpected touchdowns and standout performances from the position.

Fantasy managers have discovered that embracing this unofficial holiday can be both entertaining and financially rewarding. A strategic approach involves considering a second tight end for a flex spot when matchups are favorable, a tactic that has historically yielded strong results.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is a prime example of a player who thrives on National Tight Ends Day. Throughout his participation in the holiday, he has accumulated 10 touchdowns, 121 receptions, and 1,521 receiving yards, leading all players in scores for the occasion.

Close behind Kelce with seven touchdowns each are Dallas Goedert and Mark Andrews. Goedert is set to face a Dallas defense that has shown vulnerabilities, while Andrews is matched against a Bengals unit that has historically struggled against tight ends. Despite a recent hand injury, Andrews remains a strong contender, and backup Matthew Hibner could also be a factor.

Last season, Tucker Kraft of the Green Bay Packers delivered an impressive performance on National Tight Ends Day, recording seven catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns. He is scheduled to play against the Detroit Lions, whose defense ranks 30th in DVOA against tight ends and allows over 100 receiving yards per game to the position.

In 2024, Kyle Pitts Jr. also made a significant impact, scoring two touchdowns on four receptions for 91 yards. Despite a challenging matchup against the 49ers, Atlanta's increased red zone passing game makes Pitts a viable starting option.

Several other tight ends warrant consideration for fantasy lineups. The Chiefs' defense, which allows the third-most fantasy points per game to tight ends, makes Seattle's A.J. Barner a potential sleeper. If Kenyan Sadiq of the New York Jets is healthy, he could exploit a Miami defense that ranks poorly against the position.

Tampa Bay's Cade Otton presents another option against Carolina, especially if Baker Mayfield returns to quarterback. For a deeper sleeper, Evan Engram of the Denver Broncos could be a strong play. With 11 targets over his last three games, Engram faces the Arizona Cardinals, who rank 28th in DVOA and fantasy points allowed to tight ends.

As the NFL continues to acknowledge and celebrate National Tight Ends Day, fantasy managers are encouraged to leverage this opportunity. Starting a capable tight end in a flex spot could provide the competitive edge needed to win weekly matchups.
