Nathan Cleary's Devastating Leg Break Exposed in Graphic Photo, Star Defends Tackler

A leaked photograph of Nathan Cleary's severely injured ankle has revealed the full extent of the compound fracture and dislocation he sustained during the Penrith Panthers' preliminary final loss to the Newcastle Knights. The image shows bone piercing the skin of his left ankle, with his foot pointing at an unnatural angle.

Cleary underwent emergency surgery for the injury, which occurred during a hip-drop tackle by Newcastle's Phoenix Crossland. Medical staff reportedly worked to keep Cleary's leg stable due to concerns about blood flow to his foot. Sources within the club described the injury as the worst leg break they had witnessed, likening the bleeding to a "bullet wound."

Despite the severity of his own injury, which could sideline him for up to six months, Cleary has publicly defended Crossland against online abuse. Cleary stated the tackle was an "accidental" consequence of a "split second moment" and revealed that Crossland had reached out to apologize. "Please don't be one of these people writing comments like this to Phoenix, it was a complete accident and he doesn't deserve this unwarranted hate," Cleary wrote on Instagram. "He's a competitor and our game is made up of split second moments that sometimes lead to unfortunate circumstances. Comments like this are so unfair. Spread love not hate."

Crossland was sent off in the 35th minute of the match for the tackle, leaving Newcastle to play with 12 men. He faces a judiciary hearing for dangerous contact, with his availability for the grand final uncertain. Knights director of football Chris James expressed sympathy for Cleary's injury but defended Crossland, highlighting his extensive tackle count and character. "Phoenix Crossland has made more tackles in the NRL than any other player and he got one wrong," James said. "He got one wrong and it was a horrible injury for Nathan but that's not Phoenix's go."

Cleary is also set to have an operation on his right foot, which he played with a broken fifth metatarsal. His father and coach, Ivan Cleary, described a difficult halftime visit with his injured son. "I went and saw him [Nathan] at halftime and saw the whole crew, my family, in there. That was hard and a bit emotional," he said.

Following his surgery, Cleary shared a determined message from the hospital. "Yesterday sucked but it's all part of the journey and it's made me even more grateful for the people I have around me," he wrote. "I'll be back."
