NRL legend Paul Gallen was unexpectedly omitted from Channel Nine's commentary team for the State of Origin series decider on Wednesday night, leaving fans and observers puzzled as the broadcaster provided no official explanation.

Gallen, 44, has been a prominent voice on Nine's rugby league coverage since 2018 and a consistent member of the commentary team for several years. Despite being present at Suncorp Stadium for the pivotal Game Three, he did not appear on Nine's broadcast.

Instead, Gallen was seen working with bookmaker PointsBet at the match. He shared a short video clip on social media from a hospitality box, where he was joined by Maroons legend Justin Hodges and former Fox League reporter James Hooper. He also reposted several social media updates celebrating his home state's underdog victory.

Gallen is a significant figure in New South Wales Origin history, having captained the Blues and been named Player of the Series in 2014, marking the team's first State of Origin title since 2005. He has been a regular panel member on the program "100% Footy" and has provided color commentary and player interviews during matches.

His absence on Wednesday night did not go unnoticed by viewers, many of whom took to social media platform X to express their confusion and dissatisfaction. Comments suggested a preference for Gallen over other commentators and labeled the decision "horrible."

Gallen's media career began shortly after his retirement from professional rugby league. In addition to his television commitments with Channel Nine, he also holds a role with radio station 2GB's Continuous Call Team and has accumulated considerable experience as a sideline commentator and interviewer.

Channel Nine has been contacted for comment regarding Gallen's absence from the State of Origin broadcast. The network has yet to provide a statement on the matter, further fueling speculation about the reasons behind his conspicuous omission. Gallen posted a video (pictured) showing he was at the ground on Wednesday night, adding to the mystery over his absence from TV screens
