Myles Garrett's Recovery Extended After Knee Surgery, Rams Face Significant Blow

The Los Angeles Rams have received a significant setback as star pass rusher Myles Garrett's recovery from knee surgery is expected to take approximately six weeks, a timeline that pushes his potential return date back considerably. This extended layoff could mean the veteran defensive player misses crucial mid-season matchups.

Garrett, acquired in a major offseason trade on a five-year, $208 million contract, underwent arthroscopic surgery to address discomfort and swelling in his knee. The issue had lingered since training camp, impacting his performance in the Rams' season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia.

While Garrett is eligible to return from injured reserve after four games, which would align with the Week 6 game against the Arizona Cardinals on October 18, the new six-week rehabilitation schedule suggests a return around Week 9. This could cause him to miss games against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7 and the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 8. A Week 9 matchup against the Washington Commanders on November 8 has now emerged as a more realistic target for his return.

Garrett acknowledged his subpar performance in the season opener, stating, "This was the worst version of myself that I've put out there, and I've got to be better." He expressed determination to recover and return to his previous form.

Head coach Sean McVay had previously downplayed Garrett's knee soreness in early August, emphasizing caution with the player. "He has a little soreness in his lower half, but nothing to worry about," McVay had said. "So we're erring on the side of being smart with him."

Despite Garrett's desire to return sooner, the team is expected to adopt an ultra-cautious approach given his significant contract and importance to the defense. Garrett has a history of durability, missing only two games in his last five seasons with the Cleveland Browns.
