Mumps Outbreak Disrupts San Diego State Football Team, 32 Players Affected
An alarming rise in mumps cases has placed a significant number of San Diego State football players on the injury report, creating uncertainty just before a key conference game.
San Diego State football is facing significant disruption due to a mumps outbreak that has led to 32 players being placed on the team's injury report.
University officials confirmed on Wednesday that San Diego County Public Health Services has identified 14 confirmed cases and one probable case of the virus, a notable increase from the initial reported numbers. The university has stated that the outbreak appears to be contained within a single athletic team, which reports indicate is the Aztecs football squad under head coach Sean Lewis.
The team's availability report released on Wednesday listed 32 players, with 17 designated as doubtful or out. While some of these absences are attributed to other injuries, the mumps outbreak is a primary concern.
Lewis acknowledged the team's struggles with player availability, stating, "The football gods have not really favored us with the injury luck." He added, "Guys have got to be ready to step into the light when the time comes. We've been given a nice storm here. But this too shall pass, and we've got to be able to see our way through it."
In a message to students, Dr. T Ghosh, medical director of San Diego State Student Health Services, noted that new cases reflect spread within the team and potential exposure to additional close contacts, given that mumps symptoms can take 12 to 25 days to appear after exposure. The university is implementing daily actions to manage the situation.
Mumps is a viral infection that spreads similarly to colds and flu, primarily through infected saliva. Common symptoms include swelling of the salivary glands, fever, headache, nausea, joint pain, and loss of appetite. While most individuals recover without severe complications, potential risks include inflammation of the pancreas or liver, and in some cases, meningitis.
Students have been advised to avoid sharing food, drinks, and smoking or vaping devices. Frequent handwashing and staying home when sick are also recommended measures.
The Aztecs have experienced a challenging start to their season, with three losses in their first four games against UCLA, James Madison, and Toledo. Their only victory to date was against Portland State on September 6.
