Mourinho and Simeone Set to Reignite Madrid Derby Rivalry

Jose Mourinho and Diego Simeone will renew their managerial rivalry when Real Madrid visit Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday. The two coaches have not faced each other in a competitive match since 2014, when Mourinho's Chelsea were eliminated from the Champions League by Simeone's Atletico.

Their last encounter as rival Madrid managers was in 2013 at the Vicente Calderon, where Simeone's Atletico defeated Mourinho's Real Madrid 4-1. This fixture marks a significant moment, as it has been over a decade since their paths crossed in a derby setting.

Mourinho acknowledged the special nature of derbies, citing the history, culture, and fan passion, but emphasized that securing three points remains the primary objective. His record against Simeone shows three wins and one draw in their previous six meetings. Atletico's 2013 Copa del Rey final victory over Real Madrid ended a 14-year drought for derby wins.

Real Madrid enters the match second in La Liga with 15 points from six games, level with Real Betis and trailing league leaders Barcelona by six points. Atletico Madrid are fourth with 13 points. Following consecutive defeats, Atletico have since secured back-to-back victories, defeating Real Sociedad 3-0 and Osasuna 4-0. Real Madrid also come into the derby on a high after a narrow 3-2 win against Elche.

Mourinho has largely deflected comparisons with Barcelona, whose own manager, Hansi Flick, has overseen a perfect start to their season. Real Madrid, by contrast, have often needed late interventions to secure results, as seen in their 3-2 victory over Elche where a 91st-minute winner sealed the points after leading 2-0.

"The league is a marathon and it's not always a straight line. There will be obstacles, but we will be there to overcome them," Mourinho stated, highlighting his team's resilience. He conceded that the team has room for improvement in controlling matches, despite securing late wins.

The derby carries particular weight due to Real Madrid's recent struggles at the Metropolitano, having won only two of their last 11 away matches against Atletico, with their last league victory at the stadium dating back four years. Last season, Atletico secured a dominant 5-2 win in the corresponding fixture.

Mourinho, who returned to Real Madrid this summer, has instilled a focus on organization and adaptability. He suggested his tactical approach is fluid, adapting to the strengths of his players. Simeone identified Real Madrid's transition play as a key threat, particularly their ability to exploit space with players like Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr.

"When there's a loss of possession, they look for [Kylian] Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, they play to that strength," Simeone commented. "We have to read the game well and not allow any turnovers, so we don't allow them to use those transitions."

Simeone has urged his Atletico players to maintain composure amidst the pressure of the derby. He described his team as still being "in construction" following a significant summer transfer window with multiple arrivals and departures. While Julian Alvarez has been dealing with a muscle problem, Simeone confirmed he would feature, adding further attacking options. Despite the rivalry, Simeone expressed deep respect for Mourinho, whom he has long admired. Mourinho, in turn, reciprocated the sentiment, noting his positive discussions about Simeone for a documentary.
