Motherwell's European campaign faces an uphill battle after a 3-1 defeat to German side Freiburg in the first leg of their Europa League playoff tie at Fir Park. Despite a promising start that saw them take an early lead, Motherwell were ultimately undone by Freiburg's quality and a second-half red card.

Regan Charles-Cook ignited the home crowd in the second minute, converting a well-worked move from the left flank after a sharp one-two between Emmanuel Longelo and Joe Hodge. The early goal gave the Scottish side a dream start, and they continued to press Freiburg, making it difficult for the visitors to establish their rhythm.

Freiburg, who reached the Europa League final last season, began to assert their dominance as the first half progressed. Matthias Ginter drew a save from Motherwell goalkeeper Alex Paulsen, and Yuito Suzuki also tested Paulsen with an effort from inside the box. The equalizer came just before the half-hour mark when Ginter headed home a wicked set-piece delivery from Derry Scherhant, a goal that was awarded after a lengthy VAR review.

Second Half Shift

The second half saw Motherwell introduce new signing Seb Palmer-Houlden, who offered a different dimension in attack. However, the complexion of the game shifted significantly in the 65th minute when Martin Moorman was shown a yellow card for a challenge on Yannik Engelhardt inside the area. After another extended VAR check, the yellow card was upgraded to a red, reducing Motherwell to ten men.

Matthias Ginter calmly converted the resulting penalty to put Freiburg in front. Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage, Motherwell continued to battle. However, with the final action of the game, substitute Keisuke Goto rose unchallenged to powerfully head home a third goal for Freiburg, dealing a significant blow to Motherwell's hopes of advancing.

Despite the scoreline, Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson's side earned credit for their effort and bravery, particularly in the opening stages. The return leg in Germany is scheduled for next Thursday.
