Monfils Defends Wife Svitolina Amid Backlash Over Marriage Split

Gael Monfils has publicly defended his wife, tennis player Elina Svitolina, against what he described as "venomous" backlash following their announcement of a marriage breakdown. Svitolina, 32, had cited the mental toll of the war in her native Ukraine as a significant factor in her decision, stating the conflict had reshaped her perspective on life.

These revelations prompted a strong negative reaction online towards the world No. 6, particularly her later comment that the end of her marriage to Monfils had influenced his decision to retire earlier than anticipated. Monfils, 40, had been scheduled to retire at the Paris Masters in November, but his second-round exit at the US Open marked his final professional match.

Monfils addressed the criticism in a statement on Instagram, asserting that while Svitolina owed no one an explanation, she chose to speak "vulnerably and truthfully." He expressed disappointment with the subsequent online commentary, which he found to be "unkind at best and venomous at worst."

"Elina and I may no longer be a couple, but we are still a family," Monfils stated. "Though my heart hurts, I am forever grateful to her for her support and love over the years. While I am deeply grateful that the public feels so invested in my happiness, I have found the lack of grace and kindness shown towards Elina upsetting."

He urged critics to remember that "there is so much more that happens in a relationship behind the curtain that cannot be explained in a post." Monfils emphasized their continued mutual respect and care, especially as co-parents to their four-year-old daughter.

Svitolina had shared her personal struggles, writing, "This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to share. Everyone knows how much Ukraine means to me. What I have rarely spoken about is what the war has done to me inside. With time, I came to understand that I need to find my way back to myself and that I cannot do that within our marriage. It is the hardest truth I have ever had to face and the hardest thing I have ever had to tell the person I love."

She added that Monfils listened and respected her needs with "strength and grace." Svitolina also clarified that their marriage is ending, but their family is not, and that there is no one to blame, but rather two people who "loved each other deeply and a story that is changing shape."

Monfils and Svitolina recently teamed up to reach the US Open mixed doubles semi-final. Svitolina's most recent tournament appearance was at the Wuhan Open, where she was defeated in the quarter-finals.
