Missouri High School Football Referee Suspended After Grabbing Player
The Missouri State High School Activities Association suspended an official less than 24 hours after the incident.
A high school football referee in Springfield, Missouri, has been suspended after video surfaced showing him grabbing a player following a touchdown. The incident occurred during a game between the Glendale Falcons and Kickapoo Chiefs.
Glendale Falcons receiver Joelle Rover scored a 43-yard touchdown and was celebrating with teammates when the referee, identified as an official from the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA), approached and grabbed him. The interaction, captured on video, has drawn widespread criticism and led to the official's swift suspension by the MSHSAA.
According to reports, the suspension was issued less than 24 hours after the incident, indicating the severity with which the league viewed the referee's actions. Glendale coach Frank Tristan expressed his dismay, stating that the incident tarnished the game and that the referee should not have touched his player.
The player, Joelle Rover, a senior receiver, has reportedly drawn interest from several college programs, including Princeton, Western Illinois, and Lindenwood. He had a notable performance the previous year with 11 touchdown passes and over 1,000 receiving yards.
Former NFL player and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III also commented on the video, posting on social media that the referee had "lost his DAMN MIND" for putting hands on a player unnecessarily. The motivation behind the referee's actions remains unclear, but the MSHSAA's quick decision underscores the unacceptable nature of the physical contact with a student-athlete.
