French Open champion Mirra Andreeva reacted to her second-round Wimbledon defeat against Barbora Krejcikova by throwing her racquet and exclaiming "I quit." The 19-year-old player was eliminated after a three-set match, with Krejcikova, the 2024 champion, winning 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.
Andreeva, who secured her first Grand Slam title last month, has shown a volatile temper at times since breaking through on the professional tour in 2024. In March, she smashed her racquet during her defense of the Indian Wells title. Following her Wimbledon loss, she directed the outburst at her player box before professionally congratulating Krejcikova at the net.
Racquet abuse on court can lead to significant fines. Novak Djokovic received a penalty in 2023 for similar behavior.
During the match, Andreeva displayed visible frustration. In the third set, a bracelet she was wearing broke, scattering beads on the court. Ground staff assisted her in collecting the beads, and she received a hindrance call. She was also observed shouting at her coach, Conchita Martinez, and struck herself on the head with her racquet.
In her post-match press conference, Andreeva became emotional, stating she would need "a couple of days" to reflect. "Sorry," she said after composing herself. "Yeah, it's going to take some time, maybe a couple of days, and then I'm going to be back to practice for hard courts. I don't know what my next tournaments are going to be. I still need to talk to my team to see where I'm going to play next."
This is not the first instance of an emotional display from Andreeva. After her defeat at Indian Wells, she was heard telling the crowd "f*** you all." During a match at the Madrid Open, she audibly expressed self-doubt, saying "I’m not a champion. I’m not a champion. I will lose. I will lose," before ultimately winning the match in three sets.
Krejcikova's recent career has been marked by injury issues, including a withdrawal from the Libema Open title match due to a respiratory illness. "It's definitely special (winning today)," Krejcikova said in her on-court interview. "I have been through a lot with injuries and my personal life. The last couple months were really hard to get through with the emotions of what has happened. But, I put lots of work and dedication in every single day. I try to go day by day. Thank you to my team in the box and everyone who stays back in Czech Republic."
