The Minnesota Twins have acquired left-handed relief pitcher A.J. Minter from the New York Mets, according to reports from Thursday. This move comes just ahead of Major League Baseball's Aug. 3 trade deadline.
In exchange for Minter, the Mets will receive two prospects from the Twins' system: third baseman Billy Amick, who is ranked 21st in Minnesota's system, and infielder Bruin Agbayani, ranked 29th.
Minter, 32, has made 23 appearances this season, posting a 1-1 record with a 2.35 earned run average and a 1.00 walks plus hits per inning pitched. He has recorded 20 strikeouts and one hold.
The acquisition addresses a need for the Twins, who have been seeking left-handed depth in high-leverage situations since Anthony Banda suffered a season-ending left lat strain in June. Minter's addition is expected to strengthen Minnesota's bullpen as they push for a postseason spot.
The trade signals the beginning of what is anticipated to be a seller's market for the Mets, who currently hold a 47-63 record. Meanwhile, the 55-55 Twins are three games behind the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central division, indicating their intent to compete this season.
