Minnesota Quarterback Takes Groin Kick in Celebration, Recovers to Win Game
Offensive lineman accidentally strikes Drake Lindsey during celebration of a rare victory over Michigan.
Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey suffered an accidental groin kick from offensive lineman Bennett Warren during a Saturday celebration, but recovered to lead the Golden Gophers to a 20-14 victory over Michigan.
Warren, a 6-foot-7, 300-pound lineman, was celebrating the rare win over Michigan when he swung his right leg out and struck Lindsey, who was standing nearby. Lindsey immediately doubled over in pain but was able to continue playing.
Lindsey later threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Darius Taylor early in the fourth quarter. Fans stormed the field at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis following the victory, Minnesota's first over Michigan since 2014.
Despite two first-half interceptions, Minnesota's defense proved pivotal, with Aydan West and Zack Harden securing second-half interceptions that set up scores. The Gophers improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play, securing the Little Brown Jug trophy at home for the first time in 49 years.
The Michigan Wolverines, now 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten, have struggled offensively this season, failing to reach 20 points in four of their five games under new coach Kyle Whittingham. Quarterback Bryce Underwood completed 10 of 21 passes for 101 yards and rushed for 20 yards on 10 carries.
