The Minnesota Golden Gophers are set to incorporate Norway's "Viking Row" celebration into their home game traditions for the upcoming season. This move follows the widespread attention the tradition garnered during the 2026 World Cup.
The Viking Row, characterized by players gathering in front of fans and initiating a synchronized rowing motion after a win, was notably performed by the Norwegian national team throughout the World Cup. Norway's journey ended in the quarterfinals, their best performance in the tournament.
The state of Minnesota has a significant Norwegian-American population, and the tradition also aligns with the branding of the NFL's Minnesota Vikings. This cultural connection was a key factor in the Gophers' decision to adopt the celebration.
Under head coach P.J. Fleck, entering his 10th year, the Gophers are looking to build on a 7-5 record from the previous season. Fleck has achieved a 66-44 overall record and a perfect 7-0 record in bowl games since taking the helm. The team returns starting quarterback Drake Lindsey, who recorded 2,382 passing yards and 22 touchdowns last season, and running back Darius Taylor, who added 671 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
The Gophers' 2026 schedule includes challenging road games against Penn State and the reigning champions Indiana, as well as a home matchup against Mississippi State. Minnesota opens its season on Thursday, September 3, at home against Akron, aiming to maintain their undefeated home record from the previous year.
