Min Woo Lee shot a bogey-free 62 to take an eight-under-par lead after the first round of the Tour Championship in Atlanta. The Australian's performance on Thursday at East Lake Golf Club equaled his best round on the PGA Tour during the season-ending event.

Four strokes behind Lee, England's Tommy Fleetwood, the defending champion, posted a four-under 66 to position himself among the contenders. Fleetwood's opening round included four birdies.

Lee holds a two-stroke advantage over Norway's Viktor Hovland, the 2023 champion, and American golfers Collin Morikawa and Chris Gotterup, who are tied for second at six under par. Fleetwood is in a group at four under, alongside Americans Rickie Fowler and Cameron Young, and Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, seeking a record-extending fourth FedEx Cup title, had a mixed start. He bogeyed two of his opening four holes but recovered on the back nine to finish at two under par.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is at five under after closing his round with a birdie on the 18th hole.

Robert MacIntyre of Scotland is at three under, highlighted by an eagle on the sixth hole. Justin Rose and Alex Fitzpatrick of England both signed for rounds of 68.

Of the 29 players in the field, none finished over par in the opening round. The winner of the Tour Championship will claim the FedEx Cup and a $10 million prize. Live text coverage of the final round is scheduled on the BBC Sport website and app.
