Mike Tirico, a prominent NBC play-by-play announcer, recently revealed that he might have declined the lead golf announcer position nearly three decades ago had he anticipated the level of criticism from golf fans.

During an appearance on the "Fore Play Podcast," Tirico discussed the constant scrutiny that golf viewers often direct at announcers and the sport's television coverage. He noted that even before the advent of social media and podcasts, golf fans were vocal about their opinions.

Tirico, who described himself as not being an initial "golf guy," took on the role at ABC Sports in 1997. He joined veteran golfer Curtis Strange to help re-establish the network's golf team. He acknowledged the significant impact of colleagues such as Strange, Gary Koch, and Andy North in helping him navigate the early stages of his golf broadcasting career.

"Without them 30 years ago, I would have been a failure," Tirico stated. "I’m glad I didn’t know the perils that were waiting, but glad I survived it."

Despite the initial challenges and the potential deterrent of fan criticism, Tirico expressed gratitude for the opportunity, recognizing that it significantly altered the trajectory of his career. He has since become one of television's most respected broadcasters, covering a wide range of sports including the NFL, NBA, and the Olympics. Tirico became part of ABC's golf coverage in late 1996 and continued with the sport after moving to NBC in 2016.
