Michael Penix Jr. Named Falcons Quarterback for Short-Week Packers Showdown
Atlanta turns to rookie QB1 following a dismal 0-2 start and poor offensive production.
Atlanta Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski has officially named rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. the starter for Thursday night's game against the Green Bay Packers. This decision comes after an abysmal 0-2 start to the season, during which the Falcons' offense has struggled to produce points and has failed to reach the red zone.
Penix will make his NFL debut under difficult circumstances, facing the Packers' pass rush on a short week at Lambeau Field. The move aims to inject life into an offense that has managed only 16 total points through its first two games. The team's previous starting quarterback, Cooper Rush, was benched during Week 2's 34-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers after committing three turnovers, including two interceptions. Undrafted rookie Jack Strand took over but threw an immediate pick-six.
The Falcons' quarterback situation was complicated by an oblique injury suffered by offseason signee Tua Tagovailoa just before Week 1. Tagovailoa had won the starting job in training camp, leaving Rush to step in by default. The team has now seen six different Week 1 starting quarterbacks in the past six years.
Penix has been recovering from his third career ACL tear, sustained in a Week 11 loss in 2025. He has been splitting first-team reps in practice and received the green light to play. Despite the challenging assignment ahead, his arm strength is seen as Atlanta's best hope to stretch opposing defenses, potentially opening opportunities for running back Bijan Robinson and receivers Drake London and Kyle Pitts.
