Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has stated that his old club possesses the capability to challenge defending champions Arsenal for the upcoming Premier League title. Owen also expressed that, with the exception of Arsenal, most other top clubs face significant questions heading into the new season.

Liverpool have undergone a period of change, appointing Andoni Iraola as their new manager in May after Arne Slot's departure, and seeing star player Mohamed Salah move to Turkey. The Reds will begin their campaign at St James’ Park against Newcastle.

"It wouldn't be the biggest surprise if Liverpool won the league," Owen told Daily Mail Sport. "They've certainly got some great players and the opportunity of one or two joining as well in the next week or two. It’s absolutely not out the question."

Owen suggested that Arsenal appear to be the most stable team, noting their strong performance last season. He highlighted potential issues for other clubs, including Manchester City, who have lost manager Pep Guardiola and player Rodri. Liverpool, he noted, also face the challenge of replacing Salah's goal output and adapting to a new manager.

"Chelsea and Tottenham have new managers. Can United cope with the extra games they’ll have this season? They’ve also lost Casemiro," Owen added. "There are big questions about virtually every team bar Arsenal, but it wouldn't be a surprise at all if Liverpool had a good season."

Last season, Liverpool finished fifth after winning the title in the 2024/25 season under Arne Slot, leading to his dismissal. The team's performance was impacted by injuries, including to striker Alexander Isak, who joined from Newcastle for a reported British record fee of £125 million.

Isak is set to face his former club on Sunday, and Owen believes his performance will be crucial for Liverpool. "I love him (Isak). He's some player," Owen said. "I don't think Isak is a question. He’s proven as it comes. He’s done it for a long period of time. He's done it in the Premier League. He's done it in the big games. I think he's an exceptional player, but obviously injuries can occur and that was a nightmare for him in his first season. He really needs to be at the top of his game because with Salah gone and (Hugo) Ekitike out, Liverpool have limited options in attacking areas."

Newcastle also face a season of transition under new head coach Matthias Jaissle, following the departures of Eddie Howe and key players like Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon. Owen believes this season will be a defining one for both clubs.

"Neither of those clubs are in the position they were this time last year," he stated. "One was reigning champions and one had just won a cup and was in the Champions League. For both teams, last season was a bit of a downturn. It’s a new manager for both teams, lots of new players and lots of questions to answer. It’s a big season ahead."

Owen's insights come as his family's reality show, "Meet the Owens," is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on August 28, featuring six episodes.
