Michael Jordan's 1998 NBA Finals Jersey Sells for Record $12.3 Million
The game-worn jersey from the 'Last Dance' season fetched a record price for Jordan memorabilia at auction.
A Michael Jordan jersey worn during game three of the 1998 NBA Finals, his final season with the Chicago Bulls, has sold for $12.3 million (£9.3 million), setting a new record for game-worn memorabilia from the basketball icon. The sale took place at Joopiter, an auction house founded by Pharrell Williams.
The jersey was worn during the series that saw Jordan lead the Bulls to their sixth NBA championship. He was named the Finals' Most Valuable Player in all six of his championship victories. This particular jersey was put up for sale by entrepreneur Ryan Gough and had an estimated price of $10-15 million (£7.5-£11.3 million).
Previously, the record for Jordan memorabilia was $10.1 million (£7.6 million) for a jersey from game one of the same 1998 Finals series. The auction posting described the game three jersey as embodying "greatness as completely as Michael Jordan's game three jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals," noting that it "marks the culmination of an era that transformed basketball into a global cultural phenomenon."
The record for any piece of game-worn sports memorabilia remains with the jersey worn by baseball legend Babe Ruth during the 1932 World Series, which sold for $24.1 million (£18.2 million) in 2024.
In addition to the jersey, a 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello previously owned by Jordan was also sold at auction for $2.7 million (£2 million), exceeding the auction record for that model by four times.
