The College Football Playoff selection committee unveiled its first rankings of the season, placing undefeated Miami at the historic No. 1 spot. This marks the first time the Hurricanes have received top billing in the CFP era.
Georgia and undefeated Utah followed Miami at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. However, the committee's subsequent selections raised questions, particularly with No. 4 Indiana (8-1) ranked eight spots above Ohio State (6-2), despite Ohio State's earlier victory over the Hoosiers. Ohio State has since lost quarterback Julian Sayin to injury.
Alabama secured the No. 5 position despite carrying two losses, placing them eight spots ahead of Tennessee (6-2), which had defeated the Crimson Tide weeks prior. Committee chair Hunter Yurachek explained that head-to-head results are not the sole determinant and that deeper analysis of teams' overall strength of schedule and quality wins is considered.
"Yes, they had that loss to Tennessee," Yurachek said of Alabama. "But Tennessee doesn’t have that same level of quality wins. Yes, they beat Alabama, but you have to go deeper to find Tennessee’s next-best win."
UCLA, another undefeated team, was placed at No. 8, while Notre Dame (7-1) found themselves at No. 11, seven spots lower than their AP Top 25 ranking. Yurachek cited Notre Dame's lack of a "signature win" as a factor in their placement.
Ohio State's defense was also a point of concern for the committee following their loss to USC, contributing to their No. 12 ranking. The committee stressed that head-to-head matchups only come into play if teams are within the same four-team "pod" in the rankings.
This initial ranking is the first of six that will be released weekly until the final playoff bracket is determined on Sunday, Dec. 6. The playoff games are scheduled to begin on Dec. 18-19, with the national championship game set for Jan. 25 in Las Vegas.
Several key matchups this Saturday are expected to significantly impact future rankings, including Miami vs. Notre Dame, BYU at Utah, Alabama at LSU, and Kentucky vs. Tennessee. The SEC leads all conferences with 10 teams in the initial Top 25, reflecting the league's perceived strength despite multiple losses among its contenders.
If the playoffs were to begin today, the projected matchups would be:
- No. 12 Boise State at No. 5 Alabama
- No. 11 Notre Dame at No. 6 Kentucky
- No. 10 Ole Miss at No. 7 Texas
- No. 9 BYU at No. 8 UCLA
