Miami Claims Top Spot in Chaotic Week 7 AP Poll
Hurricanes ascend to No. 1 as five Top 10 teams falter, leading to significant shakeups throughout the rankings.
Week 7 of the college football season delivered unprecedented chaos, with five teams ranked in the Top 10 suffering losses, resulting in a complete reshuffling of the Associated Press Top 25 Poll. For the first time this season, no team maintained its previous week's ranking. Miami has climbed to the No. 1 position in the latest poll, followed by BYU at No. 2, and Ohio State at No. 3.
The Florida Gators made the most significant leap, moving up 12 spots to No. 20 after defeating Texas. Conversely, the Texas Longhorns, whom Florida beat, experienced the steepest drop in the rankings, falling from No. 7 to No. 19 after their second consecutive loss.
The top of the poll has sparked debate, with Miami securing 40 first-place votes while BYU garnered 20. Miami's path to the top included a double-overtime victory at home against Florida State, a team they have not faced in ranked status this season. BYU, now 6-0, ascended to No. 2 after defeating then-No. 2 Notre Dame, 28-24.
Among the nine SEC teams featured in the AP Top 25, Kentucky's position at No. 12 has drawn attention. The Wildcats improved to 6-1 with a road victory over Oklahoma, marking their third conference road win under first-year head coach Will Stein. Despite their strong record, some argue Kentucky deserves a Top 10 ranking.
Notably, five teams in the current AP Top 25 poll hold two losses, all of which are from the SEC. The Big 12 conference is also well-represented, with four teams ranked within the Top 15: Houston at No. 14, Utah at No. 10, Texas Tech at No. 8, and BYU at No. 2. A significant matchup on Saturday will feature Houston traveling to Utah, carrying playoff implications.
