The New York Mets have placed pitcher Devin Williams on the injured list due to a shoulder strain, adding another setback to their bullpen ahead of a series against the Atlanta Braves. Williams' IL stint was announced Monday.
This move follows a series of transactions at the trade deadline where the Mets dealt away several bullpen components, including A.J. Minter, Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver, and Huascar Brazoban. Williams had previously experienced arm fatigue last week before returning to pitch on Thursday against the Guardians.
Williams, who joined the Mets on a three-year contract valued at $51 million, has recorded 16 saves in 42 appearances this season. He has posted a 4.66 earned run average.
With Williams now on the IL, pitcher Kodai Senga is considered a potential candidate to take over the closer role for the team.
