New York Mets pitcher Austin Warren expressed significant concern, rating his worry level "definitely a 10," after departing Tuesday's game with forearm tightness. The 30-year-old reliever fears he may require Tommy John surgery, acknowledging that his elbow is his "bread and butter."
Warren, who previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023, stated he could not compare the current injury to his last. "I hope it’s not serious, hopefully it’s just some inflammation from throwing a lot lately," he said.
He experienced the forearm issue in the fifth inning of Tuesday's game against the Kansas City Royals. Warren entered the game and allowed four hits and five runs before being removed without recording an out. He immediately informed the medical staff about the discomfort and underwent MRIs Wednesday morning.
Recovery Road Ahead
With Warren placed on the 15-day injured list, Mets interim manager Andy Green acknowledged the stressful situation for the player and indicated that a recovery plan should be available soon. Warren has been a notable performer for the Mets this season, posting a 1-3 record with a 4.63 ERA over 26 appearances. His May performance, in particular, stood out with a 1.15 ERA across 11 outings.
"He has been so good for us in so many different ways, and I know the outing yesterday left a really tough taste in his mouth," Green commented on Warren's recent performance.
Warren acknowledged his performance against the Royals was affected, though he felt he pitched acceptably until the forearm issue arose. He also noted that some earlier outings this season felt worse, despite better statistical outcomes.
Roster Changes
To fill Warren's roster spot, the Mets have recalled right-handed pitcher Tobias Myers and added right-handed pitcher Xzavion Curry to the active roster. Myers was sent down to Triple-A eight days prior after giving up 14 runs in 8 2/3 innings over his last four major league appearances. Green noted that Myers needs to improve his ability to finish at-bats at the MLB level but has been impressed with his command of the strike zone.
