New York Mets rookie outfielder Carson Benge has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his left wrist, an injury that is not expected to place him on the injured list. Benge sustained the injury Friday while making a sliding catch in left field at PNC Park.
Imaging on Saturday confirmed the bone bruise, according to interim manager Andy Green. While Benge will be sidelined in the short term, he is likely to return to the lineup within days. Benge described the sensation after the play as initially subsiding but returning once the adrenaline wore off.
The 23-year-old Benge has been a notable contributor for the Mets both offensively and defensively. Benge expressed his desire to return to daily play as soon as possible, stating his belief that the injury will not require a lengthy recovery period.
In related roster moves, the Mets activated infielder Gabriel Arias, who was claimed off waivers from the Guardians on Friday. Infielder Eric Wagaman was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse. Green noted that Arias offers greater defensive versatility, which will provide opportunities to rest regular players at third base and shortstop, or in situations with a significant lead.
