Mets' Jared Young Carted Off After Brutal Mid-Game Collision
First baseman left motionless on the field after colliding with teammate Nolan McLean.
New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was stretchered off the field Thursday night after a collision with pitcher Nolan McLean during a game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field. The incident occurred in the top of the sixth inning when the Phillies' Justin Crawford hit a slow roller toward first base.
Both Young and McLean converged to field the ball. As Young dove, McLean attempted to jump over him, resulting in his knee striking the side of Young's head. Young fell face-down and remained motionless on the field for several moments, prompting medical staff from the Mets dugout to rush to his aid.
Trainers stabilized Young's neck and evaluated him before placing him on a stretcher. As he was being driven off the field, Young gave a thumbs-up to the crowd, which responded with an ovation. Mark Vientos entered the game as a defensive replacement for Young at first base.
The team has not yet released an official medical update on Young's condition. He is expected to undergo further evaluation and concussion testing at a local hospital.
