The New York Mets secured a significant three-game sweep over the Cleveland Guardians with a 13-6 victory on Thursday, marking a turnaround for the team after a series of trades at the deadline. This marks the Mets' third sweep of the season and their first since May.
Offensive Barrage Powers Victory
The Mets' offense was on full display throughout the series, averaging 8.3 runs per game. In the Thursday finale, the team amassed 18 hits, with home runs from Marcus Semien, Luis Torrens, and Francisco Lindor leading the charge. Torrens hit his second home run in three days, contributing to the Mets' eight homers in the series. "Whether it was balls exploding beyond the fence or unproven relievers emerging, the Mets had their act together for three straight days," the New York Post reported.
Torrens, who was part of the trade deadline departures, hit a two-run homer in the second inning that gave the Mets a 3-2 lead. Carson Benge added an RBI triple in the third, extending the lead to 4-2, followed by a sacrifice fly from Semien. Jared Young contributed an RBI single in the fifth, making it 6-2.
Lindor delivered a pivotal three-run blast in the seventh inning, expanding the Mets' lead to 9-5. This was Lindor's eighth home run since returning from the injured list on June 24. The Mets further padded their score in the eighth with four runs, including an RBI double by Francisco Alvarez and bases-loaded walks by Young and Torrens, before Bo Bichette singled in the final run.
Pitching Performance and Deadline Trades
Starting pitcher Nolan McLean had a mixed outing, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits with three walks and eight strikeouts over five innings. He allowed the Guardians to take an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Mets' offense responded. Despite a strong stretch where he retired 11 consecutive batters, McLean gave up a three-run homer in the fifth that narrowed the deficit to 6-5.
The successful sweep followed a series of trades made by the Mets leading up to the deadline. Players such as Huascar Brazoban, Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver, Clay Holmes, and Tyrone Taylor were involved in departures, while Freddy Peralta and A.J. Minter were traded in the days prior to the deadline.
