Play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen expressed severe disappointment with the New York Mets’ performance during Wednesday's broadcast, calling the team's play "the depths of despair" after a 10-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs.
The Mets committed six errors in the second game of a doubleheader, contributing to what Cohen described as an "embarrassing" defeat. This followed a 10-3 loss in the first game, marking a frustrating day for the team.
"I mean what do you say at this point? I mean, this team is in the depths of despair," Cohen stated on the PIX 11 telecast. "Can’t get starting pitching to hold the other team at bay. Struggling with their offense, and now the defense falls apart."
He further characterized the six infield errors as "unprecedented." During the team's final at-bat, Cohen remarked that the game was "the kind of game that causes reevaluations," adding, "You can profess all you want in being confident in the team you have. But this has been nothing short of ugly."
Fans at Citi Field echoed the sentiment, chanting for former slugger Pete Alonso, who departed for the Orioles in the offseason. The Mets have now lost five consecutive games, pushing them 12 games below .500. Manager Carlos Mendoza echoed the frustration, calling the loss "embarrassing" and the second game "unacceptable."
