Lionel Messi reached a new milestone in World Cup history during Argentina's 3-2 round of 16 victory over Egypt on Tuesday, but it was not entirely a positive one. Messi became the first player in World Cup history to miss two penalties in a single edition of the tournament.
The missed penalty occurred in the 15th minute after Argentina fullback Nicolás Tagliafico drew a foul. Messi's attempt was saved by Egypt's goalkeeper Mostafa Ahmed Shobeir, leaving Argentina trailing 1-0. This miss adds to Messi's penalty record in the tournament, which now stands at one miss, three saves, and four conversions in eight career penalty attempts, excluding shootouts.
Despite the personal setback, Messi played a crucial role in Argentina's eventual comeback. He also became the tournament's all-time assists leader during the match. Argentina scored three goals in the final 11 minutes, plus stoppage time, to secure the 3-2 win and advance to the quarterfinals. They are scheduled to play the winner of the Switzerland vs. Colombia match on Saturday in Kansas City.
